Introduction

Sizzix Big Shot Plus is a die cutting machine that can cut and emboss a variety of materials, including paper, cardstock, and fabric. It is compatible with a wide range of dies and embossing folders, making it a versatile tool for any crafter.

I am a crafter. From scrapbooks to jewelry, I just love creating things. I especially enjoy quilting. It’s wonderful to be able to make something that can be passed down from generation to generation. My only problem with quilting is that, after a while, all that cutting really makes my hands hurt.

Once the pain sets in, the joy disappears. Rotary cutters aren’t much better. I mean, who hasn’t cut their hands with one while trying to cut fabric? Not fun at all. So I have been keeping my eyes open, looking for something that could reignite my passion for quilting but could be used for other crafts as well.

Well, I am happy to report that my search is over! The Sizzix Big Shot Plus has come to my rescue! This nifty little machine is so versatile that it is a MUST for every craft room! Not only does it come in handy for quilting, but it also makes paper crafting an absolute dream.

I wanted to create a personalized softball theme for my daughter’s last birthday. I used the Big Shot Plus to create not only the invitations but all of the party decorations and favors as well! When her coach saw them, she asked me to handle the decorations for the end-of-the-season party. Not a problem!

Sizzix Big Shot Product Overview

Measuring at approximately 15 ¾” x 11 ¾” x 7 ½”, this little beauty can travel anywhere with you. You’ll be the envy of your weekly crafting group when you show up with this gem! Its comfort grip handle has ended my hand cramping woes, making crafting a much more enjoyable experience.

If you already own Sizzix dies, you can use them in the Big Shot Plus (except for the Bigz Pro dies – I know, a little disappointing but this machine is so great, it’s not even close to being a deal breaker). You can use an array of different sized dies, as well, including the 9” plastic-backed dies and Sizzix’s embossing tools!

There are so many dies in the Sizzix library, lending to the versatility of this product. From shapes to words and everything in between, there is a die for EVERY crafting possibility!

Also included with the Big Shot Plus are a pair of Standard Cutting Pads and the Big Shot Plus Platform. You also get Adapters A & B. If you have components that are thinner than a Bigz Die, these adapters make them compatible with the Plus. This even includes dies and embossing tools of other brands!

Having previously used the Big Shot, I was impressed that the Big Shot Plus didn’t really weigh anymore. I also didn’t have to hold it down to use it, which I loved.

Easy to Use and Oh-So-Comfortable

Because of the simplistic design of the Big Shot Plus, maintaining control of your work is easier than ever. The alignment, speed, and precision make moving as quickly or slowly as you want on a project completely up to you. Its wide platform now gives you more options to expand the materials you craft with!

With the Big Shot Plus being a manual machine, you will use the hand crank to move your materials through it. No worries, though, because the crank is padded and super comfy to use. Honestly, this is one of my favorite features! My hands are far less tired at the end of a project now.

Sizzix really upped their game with the Big Shot Plus in a lot of ways but one notable attribute was how smoothly the machine operates. I have worked with manual die cutters that yank and tug; I always have problems getting the materials through them. Not with the Plus. Every material I have put in it has glided right through!

In A Nutshell

While the pros certainly outweigh the cons with this splendid little machine, let’s outline them both so that you will have a clear understanding of just how the Big Shot Plus can benefit you.

I absolutely recommend this machine to crafters of all types. As a quilter, I am thrilled to be able to put down the scissors and the rotary tool. Not only from a comfort standpoint, but also because the Big Shot Plus gives me far more precise cuts! Now I’m pain-free AND quilting faster! Talk about winning!

As a paper crafter, I have been able to create so many items that I would have NEVER been able to find in a store. The time and money I saved creating the décor, invitations, and favors for my daughter’s party alone was worth more than what I paid for this machine!

Pros

  • Extraordinarily simple and comfortable to use
  • Ease of portability – includes a handle for carrying
  • Works with a wide range of materials
  • Versatile – great for any type of project from paper crafts to quilts
  • Compatibility with (almost) the entire Sizzix die collection

Cons

  • Not compatible with the Bigz Pro dies

Conclusion

It doesn’t matter if you are just a zealous crafter or someone looking to start a small crafting business, the Sizzix Big Shot Plus is an absolute necessity. I think that it is one of the best die cutting/embossing machines available today.

Its larger cutting surface not only makes quilting a breeze but it’s also ideal for scrapbooking and card-making. Imagine the looks on your family and friend’s faces when they get hand-crafted Christmas cards from you this year!

In the case of the Sizzix Big Shot Plus, the minimal investment is definitely worth the long-term return!
